An honest look at how accurate AI virtual try-on really is — what it shows reliably (length, colour, proportion), what it cannot show (fabric weight, stretch, movement), and how to judge a result before you trust it.

Accuracy is two questions, not one
When people ask whether virtual try-on is accurate, they are usually asking two different things at once, and the answers are not the same. The first is whether the person in the result looks like them. The second is whether the garment in the result looks like the garment that will arrive.
These come apart more often than you would expect. A result can be an excellent likeness of you wearing something subtly wrong, or a faithful reproduction of the garment on a body that has been quietly slimmed. Knowing which one you are looking at is most of the skill in reading a try-on.
The rest of this article separates the two, because the failure modes are different and so is what you should do about them.
What it gets right, reliably
Some things a try-on shows well enough to make a decision on, and they happen to be the things product photography is worst at.
- Length. Where a hem falls on your legs is the single most useful thing a try-on tells you, because it is the thing a model photo cannot tell you at all — the model is a different height, and "midi" is a word, not a measurement.
- Proportion. How a cut reads on your frame rather than on a body chosen because the sample fits it.
- Colour against your skin. Studio lighting shifts colour, and a garment that looks warm on a model under tungsten can read completely differently on you in daylight.
- Print and pattern scale. A stripe or check that looks fine on a 5'10" model can overwhelm someone shorter, and this is visible immediately.
- Placement. Where a yoke, a chest print or an embroidered panel actually lands on your body.
What it cannot show, and never will
These are not bugs that better models will fix. They are limits of what a single still image can encode, and any tool claiming otherwise is overselling.
- Fabric weight. A heavy crepe and a thin jersey can look identical standing still and behave nothing alike the moment you move.
- Stretch. How much a garment gives after an hour, or after ten wears, is invisible. Rigid denim in particular fits differently on day one than on day thirty.
- Movement and drape. How something falls as you walk is the reason people love or hate a piece, and a still frame cannot contain it.
- Layering room. Whether a coat fits over your usual jumper is a measurement question, not a visual one.
- Texture up close. Whether a knit is scratchy, whether a lining is cheap — these are decided by touch.
How to judge a result before trusting it
A try-on is evidence, not a verdict, and evidence can be weighed. Three checks take about ten seconds and catch most bad results.
First, look at your own face and hands. If either has drifted — a different jawline, a hand with the wrong number of fingers — the model has been inventing rather than editing, and you should not trust anything else in the frame either.
Second, look for the garment details you can verify from the product page. A logo in the right place, a button count that matches, a pocket where the listing shows one. If those survived, the garment was reproduced rather than approximated.
Third, ask whether the result flatters you more than a mirror does. Generative models have a persistent bias toward the idealised, and a silhouette that looks better than you expect is usually the model smoothing rather than the garment fitting.
When to trust it and when not to
Trust it for decisions about length, colour, proportion and print. These are the decisions that cause most returns, and they are exactly what a try-on answers well.
Do not trust it for anything structural or expensive. A suit is finished by a tailor, not by a fitting, and a try-on should decide the cut and the cloth colour rather than the fit. The same is true of anything where stretch matters — activewear, rigid denim, tailored trousers.
And treat it as one input among several. The size chart still matters. Reviews mentioning that something runs small still matter. A try-on removes the largest unknown; it does not remove all of them.
