Why dresses are hard to buy online
A dress is bought on silhouette, and a model photo tells you almost nothing about yours. The same dress reads as elegant on one body and shapeless on another, and the two things people get wrong most — where the hem actually falls and whether the waist sits where they expect — are invisible until it arrives.
What a try-on actually shows you
- Where the hem lands on your legs, rather than on a 5'10" model's
- How the neckline sits against your shoulders and collarbone
- Whether the waistline hits at your waist or above or below it
- How the colour reads against your skin tone
What it will not tell you: Fabric weight and how a dress moves are not things any still image can settle — a heavy crepe and a thin jersey can look identical standing still and behave nothing alike.
Getting a good result
Stand square to the camera with your arms slightly away from your body, in one plain layer. A dress try-on needs your full silhouette, so include yourself from head to at least mid-calf.
